Born in the Northwest corner of Kansas, in the tiny town of Norton, not too far from the Nebraska stateline, Winifred (Ann) Newson Paseman joined a rambunctious household of four. Her dad was a grocery man and her mom kept the family and house running on an even keel. In 1943, her parents made the decision to move to Eugene, Oregon, (by randomly selecting it on a map – really) to open their own neighborhood market. On the troop train the five traveled with their household goods and their pets (a Water Spaniel named Brownie and a White Duck named Mary) and found a house on Oak Drive.
Mom was a tomboy, loved to hang out with her brothers and their friends. She was also a gifted piano and clarinet player. She continued on to the University of Oregon after graduating from Eugene High School. It was during this time that she met (through mutual family friends), her anchor in life, Dad. They married, they worked, they went to university, and they had a couple of kids (and a third one who snuck in later).
Dad’s job moved the family throughout the Northwest from 1965 until 1993. Starting in Billings, Montana and ending up in Ontario, Oregon. Along the way, the two of them kept the family and the house running on an even keel. Their three grew up, graduated from high school and university; (most) got married, and (most) had families of their own. Their beloved pets, in particular dachshunds, added to the mix.
In February 2000, the anchor chain broke when Dad passed. And now, in July 2020, she has rejoined him.
Our Mom, deep down, was a kind person, an intelligent person, an arts and crafts person. She loved animals, sewing, knitting, vintage dolls, quilts, cooking, and (according to her) laundry. She also valued her friends. She certainly loved her family and we, each in our own way, certainly love(d) her. We will do our best to keep up the good work.
